John Markovich

April 27, 1927 — August 10, 2018

John Markovich, age 91, of Albion died Friday morning, August 10, 2018 at Jackson County Medical Care facility surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Markovich was born on April 27, 1927 in Albion to Myron and Anna (Marchuk) Markovich. He was a life long resident of this area and attended Albion Washington Gardner High School. John had been employed by the City of Albion for 25 years working as a fireman, beginning his career in 1955. During his employment with the city, he had served as the Interim Chief of the Fire Department on several occasions and retired as the Assistant Chief in 1980. John had a very strong work ethic, always working two or more jobs to care for his family. He had a long time working relationship with the Albion Auto Mart. Other jobs included Randy's Lawn Care, the Union Steel Products Company and Bilicke Oldsmobile Sales Inc.

On September 11, 1948, he married the former Yvonne E. Libbrecht in Marshall. She preceded him in death on March 23, 2016 following 67 years of marriage.

John enjoyed collecting model fire trucks as well as other old fire department equipment. In his retirement, John spent many hours working in his wood shop building birdhouses, cutting boards and wagons made from old Coca-Cola bottle crates. He enjoyed model "G" scale trains. He constructed a small town in his basement for his trains, complete with buildings and other structures that he built to scale. Many of the names on the businesses in the town contained the names of his family members including his grandchildren. John was a lover of all furry pets, taking in every stray that found its way to his yard.

In his youth, John enjoyed riding motorcycles. In 1980, John was awarded an Albion Minuteman Award. John was always eager to talk (or challenge) city politics with anyone willing to engage in conversation with him.

He is survived by daughters, Linda (Del) Sears of Albion, Debbie (Mike) Tymkew of Albion, Brenda (Doug) Mills of Marshall and Tina Wasick of Albion; 8 grandchildren; Jeffrey Sears, Nickolas (Brittany) Sears, Jennifer Tymkew, Sarah (Jamie) Aitken, Michael (Katie) Tymkew, Emily Mills, Matthew (Kasia) Wasick, and Jamie Wasick, 3 great grandchildren; Abigail Aitken, Maxwell Tymkew and Morgan Sears, and several very special nieces and nephews especially Randy Markovich.

In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by brothers, Sam Markovich, Alex Markovich; and sisters, Lucille Tautkus, Ann Markovich and Mary Frymark.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 12, 2018 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, with a rosary beginning at 5:00pm at the Kempf Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, Marshall Chapel.
