Jean Stewart McIlwain

March 11, 1931 — May 14, 2018

Jean Stewart McIlwain, age 87, of Marshall passed away May 14, 2018 at Bickford Assisted Living Facility in Okemos.

Jean was born on March 11, 1931 in Sprott, Alabama to George Washington and Bertha (Johnson) Stewart.

She graduated from high school in 1947 and at age 16 married Henry V. McIlwain in Columbus, Georgia. Jean and Henry had two children and shared 63 loving years together until his passing in June of 2010.

Jean worked as a Secretary at Madison Elementary School for several years, and then later took a position as Administrative Assistant at Marshall Middle School. Jean worked in the school systems for over 25 years, and retired at the age of 65.

Jean was a talented seamstress. She also loved cooking, and gardening. Jean had been a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Marshall.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Janice (Bruce) Timmons and grandson, Charles Henry Timmons, of Okemos. She is also survived by her grandson, Joshua (Renee) Boone and great granddaughter, Madison Boone, of Mattawan. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Bertha Stewart; husband, Henry McIlwain; brothers, Donald Lewis Stewart, Cecil Raiford Stewart, and Buel Lawrence Stewart; and sister, Mary Evelyn Gaulden.

A private family burial will take place at Oakridge Cemetery where Jean will be laid to rest next to her husband, Henry.

The family is being served by the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, 723 US 27 North, Marshall Chapel.

Memorial contributions are requested to the First Presbyterian Church in Marshall. Donations may be sent to 200 W. Mansion Street, Marshall, MI 49068, or leave an envelope with your donation at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, Marshall Chapel.

The McIlwain family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of Bickford Assisted Living in Okemos for the excellent care and friendship they bestowed upon Jean. They are truly grateful for the loving family atmosphere provided by Bickford.
