Gilbert Eric Bergman

January 26, 1949 — December 26, 2018

Eric Bergman is rejoicing in the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ. Above all else Eric "loved the Lord with all his heart." For 44 years, Pastor Eric loved, taught, and served the congregation of Victory Baptist Church of Battle Creek (formerly Golden Avenue Baptist Church). He often praised the congregation for their faithful love and care. You can hear an archive of his messages at www.vbcbc.com.

His family was precious to him and Eric treasured visits from his twelve grandchildren and was blessed by the love of his children. He was devoted to his wife Donna, with whom he shared a unique bond of love. He spoke daily with his family including his brothers, nieces and nephews.

Gilbert and Edna (McCulley) Bergman welcomed the birth of their eighth child, Gilbert Eric Bergman on January 26, 1949 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Harold, Eric's oldest brother, accepted Christ and led Eric to the Lord at approximately 8 years old. Eric was single-minded to serve the Lord and began preaching in his garage at age 12. Preaching the word of God was his passion and he took every opportunity to preach the word including street corners and rescue missions.

He graduated from Woodlawn High School in Baltimore. Early vocations included carpentry and ironwork. These provided financially for his education and early ministry as an evangelist. Pastor Bergman held a degree in Bible from Bob Jones University and a Master's in Counseling from Liberty University.

Pastor Bergman was known for his deep study and spent hours a day reading on many subjects including Greek and Hebrew. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed courses in art and music. Creativity characterized his life in many areas, one of his favorites being designing and building furniture in his shop. It was not unusual to find him at his "office" at Burger King or McDonald's conversing with people of all ages and walks of life.

Those in his family proceeding him to heaven were his parents, and siblings, Margaret Swain, Eileen Leake, Audrey, Gail, and Harold Bergman. He is survived by his wife, Donna; his brothers, Douglas, Robert, and Richard Bergman. His children include, Timothy and Carol Bergman, and John and Teresa Watson, David and Laura Watson, Jesus and Sarah Delgado, Jedidiah Watson and fiancé Katie Meadows, Stephen and Alison Watson, and Rosanne Van Dyke. His grandchildren include, Cheyenne, Victoria, Elizabeth, David, Kristiana, Uzziah, Lauren, Itiel, Adoniah, Shelby, Avery, and Sadie. He was also blessed by the love of his mother-in-law, Hilda West, and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Eric entered into the glorious presence of his Lord on December 26, 2018 and will be greatly missed by those of us who knew and loved him. We rejoice that we will one day be together in heaven with our Lord.

Visitation will be held on January 3, 2019 at noon at Victory Baptist Church of Battle Creek followed by Funeral Services at 1:00 pm. Pastor Bergman will be laid to rest at Austin Cemetery following the services.
