Donald Viland,71, of Marshall passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Select Specialty Hospital in Battle Creek.
Don was born on April 1, 1947 in Streator, Illinois to Donald and Vivian (Anderson) Viland. He graduated from Streator High School in 1965 and earned a Metallurgical Engineering degree from University of Missouri Rolla Campus in 1970. On November 29, 1968 he married Connie M. Bethard at the First Baptist Church in Streator, Illinois.
Don and his family moved to Marshall in 1985 when he started working for the Eaton Company. He was a Metallurgical Engineer for Eaton's for 19 ½ years, and he retired from there when the Marshall Plant closed. He later worked for H.C. Stark in Coldwater. Don was a member of the Marshall Exchange Club and was a past president. He served on the Marshall Public School Board for four years in the mid 1990's. Don was a man of faith and enjoyed teaching Sunday School or helping in a church service to which ever church he was a member. For the past few years, Don has been volunteering three days a week at the Heritage Senior Center in Marshall. Don loved to volunteer and give help where he could and for 15 years he was an usher at Norte Dame University for the football games. Don enjoyed gospel music and part of the Gaither Groupies, and he be a regular at the Hillsdale Gospel Barn. He was able to meet new friends where ever he traveled always willing to start a conversation. He loved taking bus trips, fishing trips and being a supporter of the Marshall Athletics. Don especially enjoyed being a grandpa and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Connie of Marshall; children Rob (Niki) Viland of Kalamazoo, Heather (Tony) Weberling and Heidi (Brian) Weberling all of Marshall; an exchange student son, Martin (Jannie) Mariegaard of Denmark; grandchildren, Abigail, Madeline, and Jonathan; his sister Tara (Craig) McCormick of Illinois; mother-in-law Roberta Bethard; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Family will have a memorial birthday celebration for Don on Monday April 1, 2019 from 4-8pm at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Service Marshall Chapel 723 US 27 North with a memorial service taking place at 7pm. Memorial contributions are requested to the Heritage Senior Center. Assistance with memorials is available at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services.
