Beverly K. (Hoaglin) Swope

September 25, 1943 — October 20, 2018

Beverly K. Swope, 75, of Marshall formerly of Homer, died Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Eaton County Palliative Care in Charlotte.

Bev was born on September 25, 1943 in Concord to Melford F. "Shorty" Hoaglin and Katherine (Thompson) Hoaglin. Bev's mother died in a car accident when Bev was seven years old. Her father remarried and Bev was raised by Shorty and her step-mother Rebecca Hoaglin. She grew up in Homer and was a member of the Homer High School graduating class of 1961.

Bev traveled to Germany to be married to her high school sweetheart Stanley J. Swope, who was serving in the U.S. Army there. They were married on May 18, 1962 in Germany. The couple lived there for a year and a half before returning to Homer.

Bev moved to Marshall after their divorce and has lived there since then. She worked at Walmart in Battle Creek in their offices for a number of years until retiring in 2003 due to ill health. She had previously worked at Union Steel in Albion, Lonny's Grocery in Homer and Meyer's Foods in Marshall. She had her own cleaning business, caring for homes and businesses in the area. She had worked as a nanny.

Bev was honored as "Woman Of The Year" in 1988 by the local chapter of the American Business Women's Association while working at Union Steel and "Employee Of The Year" at Meyers Foods.

Bev was a member of the United Methodist Church. She loved sports and was honored to be the "other Detroit Lions fan" in her family! Being a grandmother and the joys that came with that were a big part of Bev's life. She loved to travel and special trips were in Germany and Europe while she lived there. Bev was a compassionate woman who made sure everybody else was taken care of before herself. She was well known by family and friends for her infectious smile and her sense of humor!

Surviving are her sons Troy (Kristen) Swope and Kurt (Christine) Swope both of Homer, and Matthew (Shelly) Swope of Saginaw; 5 grandchildren Elliott (Ashley) Swope, Luke Swope, Adam Swope, Elizabeth Swope and Sophia Swope; her brother Gene (Beverly) Hoaglin of Homer and step-brother Chuck Hoaglin of Marshall; her sister Marilyn (Lonny) McCone of Homer and half-sister Janice Hoaglin of San Francisco; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Katherine Hoaglin, father Melford "Shorty" Hoaglin and step-mother Rebecca Hoaglin.
