Allen T. Blatter

February 19, 1951 — August 25, 2018

Allen T. Blatter, age 67, of Arab, Alabama, formerly of Homer, died Saturday August 25, 2018 at Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama. He was rushed there after an accidental fall at his home on Friday.

Al was born on February 19, 1951 in Angola, Indiana to Theodore L. and Iris J. (Kirby) Blatter. He grew up in the Coldwater/Quincy area. Allen graduated from Quincy High School in 1969. He entered the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam War until he was injured and honorably discharged as a result.

He was married to Melvia Marie "Cookie" Smith on July 14, 1973 in Quincy. The couple made their home in Homer for 30 years until moving to Arab, Alabama 3 years ago.

Al served as a Correctional Officer at Jackson Prison for 27 years. He retired from the prison as a Lieutenant in 2003.

Since his retirement he has enjoyed time spent with his grandsons above all else! He rarely missed a sport they were involved in. While living in the Homer area he coached baseball, football, wrestling and track for many years in Homer, Hanover-Horton, Litchfield and Jackson Parma Western schools. Since moving to Alabama he has worked at the local fitness center as a trainer, teaching Pilates, and stretch and balance classes which was something he was very proud of! He even had taught at the fitness center just prior to his accident Friday. He was a very active man who enjoyed the outdoors in many ways, and particularly liked to work in his garden. He was an avid fan of his beloved Michigan State Spartans and the Alabama Crimson Tide!

Surviving are his wife Cookie; his sons Jacob (Jennifer) Blatter of Homer, Daniel (Jennifer) Blatter of Somerville, AL, and daughter Rindi (Gary) Hoaglin of Wayland, his 5 grandsons Trevor Hoaglin, Trenton Hoaglin, Colton Blatter, Kane Blatter and Noah Lilly; his sister Lynne Blatter of Michigan, and a special nephew Ted Blatter of Bronson; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Nikki Blatter and sister Leigh Blatter.
