Shirley A. Combs, 70, of Marshall died on Friday December 28, 2012, at the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence surrounded by her family.Shirley was born on May 14, 1942, in Marshall to Jack and Donna (Myers) Rocho. She graduated from Marshall High School in 1960. In August 1960, she married Doyle Combs. Their marriage ended in divorce. Shirley has spent the past 30 years with her special companion Norman "Pete" Washburn. They have farmed, took numerous farm show trips, and supported each other ever since.Shirley worked for the Calhoun County Sheriff's office in the Corrections Department as Head Matron. She retired in 2002 after 25 years of service. Along with working for the Sheriff's Department, she also farmed her entire life on the family farm in Ellis Corners with Pete and her son Rick. She was a member of the Michigan Farm Bureau, Marshall Women of the Moose Lodge #202, Michigan Fraternal Order of the Police.Shirley loved the outdoors, and she was an avid hunter. She would always jump to the chance to go out in the woods with her sons and work on or help put up a new tree stand! She also enjoyed to traveling with Pete, going to numerous farm shows, taking trips across the United States, and even going to Hawaii to visit her cousin. Shirley enjoyed going to the Calhoun County Fair, watching her grandchildren with their projects, and sitting in front of the horse barn talking with friends and neighbors. She would rarely miss a barn party or family gathering. She had a great love for life and bestowing a great work ethic on her family which was passed down from her parents. Shirley loved her friends and family and she will be missed by all that knew her!She is survived by her two sons, Randy (Cathy) Combs of Tekonsha, Rick (Linda Keen) Combs of Marshall, grandchildren Courtney (Sean) Brown of Traverse City, Cody Combs of Marshall, great-grandson Colton Brown, and special companion Pete Washburn of Marshall. She was preceded in death by her parents.Visitation will take place at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, from 1-7pm with family present to greet friends from 1-3pm and 5-7pm. Funeral services celebrating her life will take place at 11am on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home with Reverend James Codde and Mrs. Diane Inman officiating. Interment will follow at Lyon Lake Cemetery. The family will gather with friends following the committal services at the Marshall Moose Lodge. Family requests memorial contributions to the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence or to Calhoun County 4-H Draft Horse Club. Assistance with memorials is available at the Kempf Funeral Home.
