Russell Howard, 87, of Marshall passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 8, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.Russ was born on December 11, 1924, in Bardstown, Kentucky, to Reuben and Betty Howard.He graduated from high school in Sinking Springs, Ohio and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II from 1943-45. He was also called for active duty in the Korean Conflict from 1950-51.On October 11, 1947, he married Betty L. Smith at the First Congregational Church in Battle Creek.Russ owned and operated his own construction company specializing in residential and commercial building throughout Marshall and the surrounding area for over 40 years.He was a member of the Convis Union United Methodist Church and the Marshall Moose Lodge #676.Russ enjoyed playing horseshoes, bowling, working around the farm and especially spending time with family.He is survived by his wife of 65 years Betty of Marshall, two children Russell (Lavanna) Howard Jr. of Colorado and Hope Howard of Marshall, five grandchildren; Derek Howard, Kristen Patton, Jason Howard, Ryan Chapman and Troy Howard, eight great-grandchildren, his sister Ruth Lawrence of Bellevue and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.A memorial service will take place at 3:30pm on Thursday July 12, 2012, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home and Cremation Services. Reverend Sueann Hagan is officiating. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Convis Union United Methodist Church or to the Great Lakes Caring Hospice.Assistance with memorials is available at the Craig K.
