Ovie Prater, 77, of Marshall died on Thursday, May 20, 2010, at his home.Mr. Prater was born on May 6, 1933, in Salyersville, Kentucky, to Nelvin and Rosetta (Bolen) Prater. He attended school in Kentucky and moved to Michigan in his teen years. He served in the US Army from 1953-1955 during the Korean War. In 1955, he married Mary Kesterson in Albion. Their marriage ended in divorce. In 1969, he married Hattie (Campbell) Dillon in Marshall.Mr. Prater worked for Corning Glass in Albion for many years. He later worked at the Wag-on Inn in Marshall until he retired in 1994. Mr. Prater was a member of the Marshall Moose Lodge #676. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed bowling on many different bowling leagues. Mr. Prater also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and camping. He rarely missed a Detroit Tigers, Pistons or Lions game on TV or the radio. He enjoyed traveling to casinos, scratch off lottery tickets, and playing the guitar, banjo, and fiddle.He is survived by his wife Hattie Prater, of Marshall, three children, Kay (Bill) Corser of St. Johns, N.H. Prater of Jackson, Teresa (Lloyd) Rose of Concord, step children, Merridessa (Robert) Katz, of Marshall, Rick (Feef) Dillon of Marshall, 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a sister Peachie Hall of Albion. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings, and 2 grandchildren Amanda and Crystal Prater.Visitation will take place at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home on Sunday from 3-6pm with family present at that time and on Monday from 9am-8pm with family present to greet friends from 5-8pm. Funeral services celebrating his life will take place at 1:30pm on Tuesday at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Pastor Dennis Croy officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Oakridge Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Great Lakes Hospice. Assistance with memorials is available at the Kempf Funeral Home.
