Obituary

Caroline (Carolyn) Ruth Gulley passed from this life into the next on April 11, 2017 at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility. She died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loving family.

Carolyn was born on December 27, 1933 to Earl Burch and Bernice (McLeod) Burch at Nichols Hospital in Battle Creek, MI. She was the middle of five children. Carolyn accepted Christ as her savior and was baptized into Christ at age 11. She never wavered from her faith, and lived her faith through service.

Carolyn met the love of her life at age 15, John (Duwayne) Gulley, at church. The two fell in love and were married on March 8, 1952, while Duwayne was on leave from boot camp. Later that spring, Carolyn graduated from Battle Creek Central High School. She worked at Michigan Bell Telephone Company briefly, before joining Duwayne at the Naval Station in Norfolk, VA. Following Duwayne's service in the Korean War, the two settled in Battle Creek and started their family.

Carolyn and Duwayne opened their home to over 90 foster children over the years. Together they served in many capacities at Central Christian Church. Carolyn was a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School leader, organist, and pianist. She was a gifted musician, playing several instruments at an early age. In the late 1960's the Gulley family moved to Marshall, MI, after purchasing an old farm house north of town. It was there that Carolyn developed a love for gardening. Her huge garden produced all kinds of vegetables that Carolyn lovingly planted, nurtured, harvested, froze, canned, and pickled. She made all kinds of jams and jellies. The family enjoyed the results of her efforts all year long. In their later years, Carolyn and Duwayne enjoyed time in Florida, traveling, trips to Lake Gogebic in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, but mostly spending time with their children and grandchildren.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Arnold Burch; sister Joyce Burch, who held a special place in Carolyn's heart and inspired her life-long concern for the disabled; and sisters Louise Cole and Earlene Zuschnitt. Carolyn is survived by her loving husband Duwayne; daughters Diane (Phillip) Clay of Kalamazoo; Denise (Bruce) Reniger of Alto; Loretta Gulley of Battle Creek; and son, Phillip Gulley of Cameron, MO. She is also survived by her grandchildren Rebekah (Mike) Hodgman of Battle Creek; Bethany Clay of Battle Creek; Nathan (Kara) Reniger and Trevor Reniger, both of Alto; along with three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Monday, May 1, 2017 from 3:30 pm to 5 pm at the Central Christian Church, 713 Riverside Drive, in Battle Creek. A memorial service will be at 5 PM at the Church. The family asks that donations honoring Carolyn be made to the Charitable Union or to Central Christian Church.

Carolyn's cremains will be interred at the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Mi in a private service.
