Jeffrey A. Begg

July 3, 1944 — May 27, 2018

Jeffrey A. Begg, age 73, of Battle Creek passed away May 27, 2018 at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Jeffrey was born on July 3, 1944 in Marshall to Dr. Allan D. and Edna Marie (Reynolds) Begg. He graduated from Marshall Public Schools and went on to earn his Bachelors in Business from Michigan State University.
Jeffrey married Barbara Baker and together had one child. Barbara preceded Jeff in death in 2003.

Shortly after graduating from Michigan State, Jeff joined Parker Hannifin Corporation in Otsego, MI in their engineering department where he worked for several years. After this, he worked in the purchasing department of Tekonsha Engineering as materials manager supporting the manufacturing of their trailer brake controls segment. Tekonsha Engineering was later Dana Corporation. While with Dana, Jeff was promoted to oversee operations including all purchasing and production activities. While still employed at Tekonsha Engineering, in December of 1976, Jeff incorporated Marshall Excelsior Company in the basement of his father's veterinarian clinic in Marshall, MI. From the beginning, Jeff had grand ideas of designing and developing products to not only meet the needs of customers but to exceed them in every fashion. The road to success was difficult and certainly not for the faint of heart as there were many long nights of working at Marshall Excelsior Company only to work full time the next day at his day job. Finally, in 1998 Jeff departed from Dana Corporation to focus 100% of his energy on his own company. At that time, the business was breaking ground for its present day headquarters located at 1506 George Brown Drive, Marshall, MI. This was a huge step in the company as it was the first time that Jeff had to risk everything by borrowing the funds in order to construct the facility. He believed firmly in the dream and that the risks would be far outweighed by the reward. He couldn't have been more correct! In 2000, Franco Domingo joined the company as its Office Manager eventually becoming Vice President all while helping continue the journey that Jeff had begun. Over the next 15 years, the combination proved to be extremely effective as the company grew more than 12 times its annual revenue from 2000 to 2015 with over 200 employees selling in over 26 nations worldwide. All the while, focusing on core values set forth by Jeff himself which were based on innovation, integrity, and above all dedication and hard work. In March of 2017, Jeff and partner Franco Domingo decided to sell Marshall Excelsior Company to Harbour Group of St. Louis, MO in order to allow the business the needed resources and financial backing to continue growing far beyond their individual capabilities. Today, Marshall Excelsior Company is world renowned for its advanced products, principles and core values that Jeff first established on that cold December day back in 1976.

Jeffrey enjoyed cars and motorcycles. He was an avid reader and loved to travel with fiancé of 15 years, Peggy. Jeff liked the thrill of the chase, and looked at business as one of his biggest hobbies. He and his daughter spent a lot of quality time together watching movies, and enjoying each other's company.

Jeffrey is survived by his daughter, Megan (Dustin) Moon of Marshall; grandson-on-the-way, Nolan Jeffrey Moon; fiancé, Peggy Domingo; brothers, Tom Begg of Marshall, John Begg of Silver Spring, Maryland, and David Begg of Marshall; sister, Susie Hess of Grand Ledge; stepson, Franco (Corinne) Domingo and family of Marshall; stepson, Mike (Becky) Domingo of Marshall; numerous nieces and nephews; and 4 step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Allan and Edna Begg; and wife, Barbara Begg.
